17 Jan 2019
It’s that time of the year again, the inevitable post-festive lull. It’s back to the grind for most of us and ‘Blue Monday’ is officially here. Dubbed ‘the most depressing day of the year’, Monday 21st January 2019 is, supposedly, even tougher to get through than usual - with the arrival of unpaid credit card bills and the realisation that Christmas is truly over…
Don’t be too down in the dumps though. The team here at BT have put together a list of blue-busting tips to help alleviate sadness around the office this January:
1. Shake things up
One of the best ways to eradicate the workplace blues is to inject a little fun into the day. This could be anything from planning a work event, like a team lunch, or having a dress down day. What about some sort of impromptu team building game or friendly competition? Whether it’s rallying the troops for an after work drink, or kick-starting the day with a team breakfast – fun events for the whole office are a great way to keep morale on the up and energy levels sky high.
2. Wear a splash of colour
January as a whole can be a pretty bleak time of the year. With the dark mornings and early sunsets, we become pretty accustomed to things appearing dismal and grey. The same can sometimes be said for our wardrobe this time of year too. So why not change that this Blue Monday by injecting a little colour into your winter workwear? Whether it’s opting for a bright shirt, or maybe an eye catching handbag – a splash of colour in your life could make all of the difference this January when it comes to lifting your mood, as well as making a bold fashion statement!
3. Give someone a pat on the back
It’s sometimes easy to feel demotivated after the post-festive lull. Blue Monday is typically a day where we feel particularly overworked and overwhelmed. Now more than ever is the best time to show your fellow colleagues a little gratitude and give them a good old pat on the back for the great work they’ve been doing. This is a sure way to boost office morale, and help those around you to feel more positive and motivated. You’ll also feel great about yourself for spreading the love too.
4. A to do list with a difference
Feeling overwhelmed with your workload? The chances are you’ll be feeling a little more swamped than usual today, and you may be struggling to get your brain into gear. It’s time to take control of the day by writing a good old to-do list! Prioritising your work and breaking it down into smaller chunks can help things feel a lot more manageable. Start with jotting down everything you need to complete for the day, and prioritise a few of the most enjoyable tasks first, to get your day off to the best possible start!
5. Eat well and take a walk
Never underestimate the importance of a good breakfast. You need to make sure you set yourself up good and proper for Blue Monday (and every other day for that matter) with the sustenance you need to keep motivated and focused. So get eating that morning porridge, and don’t forget to take a good lunch break too! If you can, try to get out and about on your break in the fresh air. Being cooped up in the office for a full day certainly won’t do your mood any favours. A brisk lunchtime walk can be the perfect way to clear your head.
