OK, so BT creates lots of new technology, but how do you actually do it?

Well, it’s a good question. To stay at the forefront of Research and Development, we have to work pretty hard. It’s tough, coming up with the next 5G, or a niche security app that protects the country (without them even knowing it). Our Applied Research graduates do just that. You’ll work in partnerships with universities and other companies to carry out unique technical research; you never know, your co-operation might just lead to the next big technology breakthrough.  

Our research teams play a vital role by applying technical skills and knowledge to solve the future problems facing the world.  You’ll need to approach things thinking like a customer; how will our new solutions and designs not only benefit us, but support our customers as well. You’ll help provide strategic direction across key technology areas to help us make the right investments and propose options for the future.  

You’ll develop your expertise in one of a number of technology areas – anything from optics, quantum technologies and novel computing architectures to video networking, multimedia applications and software engineering. And that’s not forgetting networking technologies, data science or cyber security.

Because we’ve got such a broad range of technologies for you to specialise in, it means we’ve got many different projects for you to be working on as well. You might be working on a project looking at how to increase broadband speeds, or how to find faults on our network before they occur, or how to keep BT and our customers safe from cyber-attacks. You’ll develop world-class problem solving and analytical skills, eventually becoming an expert in your field and acting as a consultant to other parts of BT.
