Gemma and Clare

We caught up with Gemma Butcher and Clare Mullane to talk about what life with a job share is like.

Tells about what do you do and where in BT you work?

We work in B2B (business to business) Transformation and are responsible for running the Transformation Management Office. We are responsible for ensuring we are allocating resources to the projects which can make the highest returns for BT and keeping them on track.

Tell us about how BT has supported in your job share?

As a company BT were open to the idea and instrumental in putting us together.

How do you deal with sharing your work?

We communicate a lot and focus on agreeing our approach and the division of labour, we will then undertake our work independently and always back each other up. Our customers should get a seamless experience, it doesn’t matter which one of us they interact with, we should be up to speed on the issue.

How have you had to adapt over the last few months whilst working from home due to the pandemic?

It has been tricky, we both have children and we have had to be flexible in our working hours. We only spent three weeks together in the office before we started working from home so we made sure we spent some time getting to know each other.

What are the benefits of a job share?

When you are not in the office you know there is someone there to keep the momentum going, it is also important when you run a team for your team members to have the support from a manager in the office with them.

How does BT support you in having a good work-life balance?

They offer flexible working patterns and there are opportunities to work from home. I also feel that as long as I get the job done, I can take time for important non-work events; like my daughters first day at school or my son’s sports day.

What advice would you offer to someone like you who was considering a career with BT?

Go for it. BT is forward thinking in its approach to flexible working and the culture of the organisation means we offer flexibility to make part-time working and job share a reality.
