Micheal Mak joined us last month, whilst the UK was in lockdown. Find out how his first month went.

I work in Wholesale Interconnect under Enterprise (B2B division) and my role is Pricing and Commercial Manager which basically ensures we are setting the right pricing strategies, offering competitive commercials to our customers and putting in place clear and unambiguous commercial agreements.
BT reached out to me regarding the role via LinkedIn. The whole process and communications leading up to me joining was informative, organised and clear. I started in the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown, which was not ideal, however BT made sure that my joining was seamless and smooth. One tip I’d like to share here is to ensure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and relevant to your latest skills and experience – I don’t think I’d be sharing my BT story right now otherwise!
BT has been very supportive during this period of time. They understand the impacts that the pandemic has caused to daily life and offer advice, guidance and support as well as dedicated channels to discuss any concerns. In addition, many resources are available to promote mental and physical wellbeing. A personal concern was job security with starting at such unprecedented and precarious times, however any concerns were quickly allayed through BT’s commitment to secure jobs for the foreseeable period. Our team has a bi-weekly virtual check in to ensure everyone is happy and well.
These are most unusual times to start with any company however my first few weeks have been extremely positive and allowed me to further develop and build my skills around communicating virtually. Everyone I have had the opportunity to communicate with thus far have all been extremely welcoming and helpful and the one recurring attribute I have noticed from everyone is positivity.
There are two things for me, the first is the language – everything is an acronym or abbreviation! The second is the social responsibility that BT have and the part they play (and continue to play) to help support the public and organisations through their initiatives like ‘Skills for Tomorrow’ and the daily tech tips where BT have joined forces with ITV to broadcast.
I would say grab the opportunity with both hands. BT is the world’s oldest communications company, the UK’s largest telecom’s provider and are leaders in their field which means you’ll be forging a career with an established, reliable and innovative organisation.
We are still hiring so keep an eye on our careers site for new job opportunities and remember to keep your LinkedIn updated.
