Do I need a special faceplate for Fibre?

There are two types of fibre-based broadband.

  • One where the fibre cable goes to the street cabinet, with copper cable from there to your home. This is known as Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) or G.fast.
  • The other is where the fibre cable goes all the way to your home. This is known as Fibre to the Home (FTTH). You don't need a special faceplate for this type of broadband, so you won't have one installed.

Fibre to the Cabinet

If you're setting up Fibre yourself

If you're setting up your Fibre, you don't need a special faceplate. We'll send you microfilters to use with your existing socket. However, you don't need to worry about microfilters if your master socket has already had a broadband accelerator faceplate fitted (master socket with two sockets).

If an engineer is setting up your Fibre

We'll fit a special faceplate to the front of your master phone socket when we install Fibre. It helps you get the fastest speeds by separating the broadband signal from any interference caused by your home's telephone extension wiring and devices connected to it.

We'll also remove any microfilters you have plugged in to phone sockets as you don’t need them for Fibre. We recommend you keep your old microfilters somewhere though, just in case you need them again in future.

How do I know if an engineer is needed for my Fibre Broadband?

In some cases an engineer will need to visit your home to optimise your telephone line for Fibre Broadband. This will depend on the product you order and the telephone line at your home. We'll let you know when you place your order if we need to send an engineer and book an appointment for you.

If you do need an engineer to get Fibre Broadband, we won't charge you anything extra.

Please see the examples here of when we send an engineer.
