Bayer Leverkusen prodigy Kai Havertz takes centre stage as "the future of German football" faces Werder Bremen

There's been a feast of Bundesliga action this weekend as German top-flight football became the first major European league to resume during the Coronavirus pandemic.

After eight matches, including Borussia Dortmund's comprehensive 4-0 win in the Ruhr derby against Schalke and Bayern Munich's routine victory at Union Berlin, there's still one remaining.

Relegation battlers Werder Bremen will be desperate to get some points on the board but face a tough test at home to Champions League-chasing Bayer Leverkusen - on Monday evening.

Twenty-year-old sensation Kai Havertz is widely tipped to be a cornerstone of German football for years to come.

The midfielder, who broke into the Bayer Leverkusen first team aged 17, has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after consistently impressing for the club he has represented since the age of 11.

With 17 goals last season in the league he became the youngest-ever player to reach the 30-goal mark in German football.

And reaching landmarks faster than anyone else has become something of a speciality for Havertz.

In December, he also became the youngest player to make 100 Bundesliga appearances – at just 20 years, six months and four days old - having already become the youngest player to reach the 50 mark.

Wise beyond his years, he is technically gifted and comfortable with the ball on either foot.

Havertz's talent was spotted early by the German national team selectors, with the youngster representing his country from Under-16 level right up to senior level where he has seven caps and one goal - against Argentina in November.

A glance at his goals last season demonstrate his full repertoire in front of goal. With ice-cool chips, drives from outside the box, headers and volleys, Havertz can score them every which way. 

Havertz will be looking to pick up where he left off in the Bundesliga season and inspire Leverkusen to a top four finish.

With the world at his feet, both Hargreaves and Honigstein have been effusive in their praise for the Leverkusen prodigy.

Hargreaves’ verdict: “He’s a really special player in the no. 10 position.

"So creative, elegant, can score goals and makes the game look so easy. I love watching him play.”

Honigstein's view:  "Havertz really is super special and not just for Leverkusen, for Germany too.

"He will be the most important player for the German national team in the next decade if he stays healthy. "
