Real Madrid 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk - Watch replay
Real Madrid fell to a shock 3-2 defeat at home to an under-strength Shakhtar Donetsk in a stunning Champions League upset.
Shakhtar had to field a weakened team as a result of coronavirus cases, but the Ukrainian underdogs tore Real to shreds as they raced into a 3-0 lead in an incredible first half.
Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior pulled goals back after the break but they were unable to avoid a humiliating loss.
RB Salzburg 2-2 Lokomotiv Moscow - Watch replay
Vitaly Lisakovich rescues a point for Lokomotiv in their Group A opener in front of a reduced crowd at the Red Bull Arena.
Former Swansea striker Eder, who scored Portugal’s winner in the Euro 2016 final, opened the scoring for the visitors before Dominik Szoboszlai curled home a superb equaliser.
The hosts then took the lead through Zlatko Junuzovic but in the 75th minute Belarus international Lisakovich struck to earn the away side a share of the spoils.
Ajax 0-1 Liverpool - Watch replay
Nicolas Tagliafico’s own goal was enough for Liverpool to beat Ajax 1-0 in the Champions League but it was the display of makeshift centre-back Fabinho which offered encouragement for the long-term absence of Virgil Van Dijk.
As expected the Brazil midfielder dropped into the back four alongside Joe Gomez, the 35th centre-back partnership to start for Jurgen Klopp, and he barely put a foot wrong in Amsterdam.
While it was not a Van Dijk-style of commanding performance it was equally effective in its own way.
Manchester City 3-1 Porto - Watch replay
Manchester City made a winning start to their latest assault on the Champions League as they came from behind to beat Porto 3-1 in their Group C opener.
A little over two months after their surprise 3-1 defeat to Lyon in the quarter-finals of last season’s tournament, City recovered from Luis Diaz’s early strike to get back in business with goals from Sergio Aguero, Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres.
It was a hard-fought win against a stubborn Porto side who defended doggedly for much of the night but were undone by a penalty and a set-piece before substitute Torres made sure 17 minutes from time.
Olympiakos 1-0 Marseille - Watch replay
Greek giants Olympiakos marked their return to Europe's top table with a one-goal win over Andre Villas-Boas' Marseille side.
Ahmed Mahgoub scored the only in Olympiacos’s 1-0 victory in Wednesday’s other Group C game following Man City's comeback win over Porto.
The 27-year-old, also known as Koka, came off the bench to make a significant impact for Pedro Martins’ men at Karaiskakis Stadium.
The forward has now scored two goals in six appearances since he teamed up with the Super League champions in August from Sporting Braga.
Mahgoub will hope to continue his impressive form in front of goal when they take on FC Porto in their second Group C game on October 27.
Midtjylland 0-4 Atalanta - Watch replay
Last season's surprise package once again proved their European credentials with a four-goal rout in Denmark.
Towering Colombian striker Duvan Zapata scored one goal and set up two more as Atalanta cruised to a 4-0 victory over Midtjylland in their Champions League Group D clash in driving rain at the MCH Arena in Herning on Wednesday.
Atalanta, who had a surprise run to the quarter-finals last season, top the pool after the opening round of fixtures.
Midtjylland visit Liverpool on Tuesday, while Atalanta host Ajax.
Inter Milan 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach - Watch replay
Romelu Lukaku scored a 90th-minute equaliser to deny Borussia Monchengladbach a famous victory in the San Siro.
The Belgian had put the hosts ahead after half-time but the Bundesliga outfit responded with two goals of their own to put the Germans in control before Lukaku bagged a second to share the spoils in Group B.
The goal was the former Manchester United's ninth in as many European games.
Antonio Conte's sit third in the group, one place above 13-time winners Real Madrid, who they face in matchday 3.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Atletico Madrid - Watch replay
Holders Bayern Munich continue their winning run in the Champions League after thumping Atletico Madrid 4-0.
Their 12th straight victory, extending their own record, came courtesy of a Kingsley Coman double – with the Frenchman continuing where he left off after netting the winner in last season’s final.
Midfielders Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso, who may already have scored the goal of the season, also found the back of the net in yet another dominant display from the Bundesliga champions.
