Champions League Matchday 5: Tuesday previews and how to watch all eight games

The Champions League returns after a three-week hiatus and there's no shortage of blockbuster ties across Europe as the last 16 looms large.

We're at the business end of the group stages, with plenty still to play for as Man Utd and Chelsea both look to secure safe passage to the next round.

The writing was on the wall for weeks, but finally it's happened. Manchester United dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Saturday's humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford.

The Norwegian gave an unprecedented emotional farewell interview following the sacking in which he tearfully wished his successor - interim coach Michael Carrick - the best for the next match.

And that match is upon us when Man United once again do battle with the team who defeated them in last season's Europa League final - likely one of the factors behind Solskjaer's time running out.

United have resembled a one-man show in the Champions League thus far, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring late winners or equalisers in three of their four matches so far.

Ahead of the trip to The Yellow Submarines, Carrick will be hoping he doesn't have to rely on another spectacular intervention from his former team-mate to bail the Red Devils out in Spain.

Man United sit top of Group F but are far from home and dry in what is one of the tightest groups in the competition.

Level on seven points with Villarreal, two points ahead of Atalanta and four clear of Young Boys, a defeat at the Estadio de la Ceramica would put them in serious danger of crashing out.

Four wins from four, 17 goals scored and just two conceded has 2020 champions Bayern Munich already in the knockout stages ahead of Tuesday's trip to Kiev.

The Bavarians look irresistible in Europe having some resounding wins over Barcelona, Benfica and Dynamo Kiev in Group E.

Yet it wasn't plain-sailing for the Bundesliga leaders at the weekend, when Bayern were defeated 2-1 at Augsburg to suffer just a second defeat of the domestic season.

"It was not an undeserved win for Augsburg," coach Julian Nagelsmann said after the match. "I am disappointed and for the first time as Bayern coach really frustrated."

Now the young coach will be looking for a response from the German giants in Ukraine, as Bayern bid to seal top spot and a seeded place in the knockout stages.

Hosts Dynamo have found it tough going in Europe this term with Mircea Lucescu's men having picked up a solitary point from their four outings.

They are still in with a slight chance of extending their stay in Europe with a Europa League spot should they record a famous win however.

In what looks to be a straight shootout for who finishes top of Group H and enters the knockout draw as a seeded side, Chelsea play host to Juventus at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues' sole Champions League defeat this campaign came away at Juventus, when Federico Chiesa's goal secured a 1-0 victory for The Old Lady in Turin.

Yet it looks to be just a minor blip for a Chelsea team who are impressing week in, week out across all competitions this season.

Thomas Tuchel's side thrashed Leicester 3-0 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, with N'Golo Kante scoring and starring against his former club.

The European champions sit top of the Premier League table and what's more, they've remained there without Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner being available for more than a month.

The Blues do appear to struggle against Italian sides though - with only one win in 10 games against Serie A teams and none since defeating Napoli way back in 2012. 

For Juventus, the Champions League has offered respite from a poor start to the Serie A campaign as they look set to miss out on regaining the Italian title.

Juventus did defeat Lazio 2-0 at the weekend though thanks to a double from unlikely goalscorer Leonardo Bonucci. A win in west London would secure top spot in Group H.

We're set for a cracker between two former champions of the European Cup as Barcelona play host to Benfica at Camp Nou.

It was doom and gloom around Barcelona following two 3-0 defeats to begin their European campaign, but they've clawed their way back into contention with back-to-back 1-0 wins over bottom side Dynamo Kiev.

The 1-0 win over Kiev three weeks ago, secured by a late goal from Ansu Fati, proved Ronald Koeman's final game and the Dutchman was replaced at the helm earlier this month by club legend Xavi.

Now the Spaniard takes charge of his first-ever Champions League game hoping to show Barcelona have what it takes to defeat a team other than the Ukrainian champions.

Given they were dismantled with ease by the Portuguese side in Lisbon, it could be a difficult task on Tuesday night.

A win would seal Barcelona's spot in the last 16 yet a defeat would see Benfica leapfrog Xavi's men and leave Jorge Jesus' side very much in the driver's seat to qualify heading into Matchday 6.

The two other sides in Manchester United and Villarreal's group do battle after the dust has settled in Spain, as Young Boys play host to Atalanta in Switzerland. 

Young Boys sit bottom of Group F with three points - courtesy of the opening-day win over Man United - but are still with a real shout of advancing. 

Atalanta meanwhile are on five points having twice conceded late Cristiano Ronaldo goals to deny them an away draw and then a win on home turf.

The Serie A hotshots edged out Young Boys 1-0 in Bergamo in Matchday 2, with Matteo Pessina's goal midway through the second half enough to separate the two sides.

It's a strike that could prove crucial in the shake-up come the end of the group-stage campaign. 

Young Boys aren't in great shape heading into Tuesday's clash either, with three defeats and a draw from their previous four matches in all competitions and sitting fourth in the Swiss Super League.

The visitors though are fresh from a 5-2 thrashing of Spezia at the weekend in which former Chelsea man Mario Pasalic netted twice.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side - who advanced to the quarter-finals in 2019/20 - will be hoping for a draw in the Villarreal vs Man United game before the tie in Bern to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

While RB Salzburg and Lille do battle in France, Sevilla will host Wolfsburg with plenty still to be decided in Group F.

The Europa League's most successful club, Sevilla, were tipped to come out on top of an evenly-matched Group F this term but find themselves on the outside looking in heading into Matchday 4.

Yet a win over Wolfsburg at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan would turn the tables around and put the Spaniards well in contention for qualification once more.

It's something Julen Lopetegui's side have yet to achieve this term however and a defeat to Lille - in which they sacrificed a 1-0 lead - last time out could prove damaging.

For Wolfsburg, who collected two points from their opening three, it was a surprise win at home to RB Salzburg that has seen them right back in the mix for a knockout spot.

The Germans are not exactly on fire heading into Tuesday's tie - with a defeat and a draw against two strugglers in the Bundesliga in their previous two outings.

This might be one for the purists too. Wolfsburg's four games in the Champions League this term have seen fewer shot attempts than any other side's matches - the Germans having only managed 27 themselves.

Group G closely resembles Manchester United's Group F in it's make-up heading into the final two games with four points separating top and bottom.

RB Salzburg lead on seven points, Lille and Wolfsburg are second and third respectively on five and Sevilla - tipped by some to top the group - are bottom with three points.

It means there's absolutely everything to play as Lille play host to RB Salzburg in north-west France bidding to leapfrog the Austrians.

The Ligue 1 outfit secured a huge win away in Sevilla last time out to propel themselves into contention of a first-ever Champions League knockout stage place.

Two Karim Adeyemi penalties were enough for Salzburg to record a win over Lille in Matchday 2 and the 19-year-old looks a real talent.

Adeyemi, already a Germany international, is drawing admiring glances from across Europe after some sensational displays this campaign, including three goals from four matches in the Champions League.

The teenager will be keen to show what he can do once again and seal the Austrian's passage into the knockouts - where Adeyemi can showcase his skills deeper in the competition.

Malmo vs Zenit, 8pm on BT Sport Extra 5HD - Watch live stream

Two sides without any real hope of making the knockouts do battle in Sweden, as Malmo play host to Zenit St Petersburg at the Eleda Stadium.

It's been a miserable return to Champions League action for Malmo with four defeats from four, 12 goals conceded and none scored thus far - Dynamo Kiev are the only other side to have failed to score.

And it's not been much fun for opponents Zenit either, with the Russian side tasting defeat in all but one of their matches.

That win? A 4-0 hammering of Malmo on Matchday 2 which represents Zenit's only win in their last 11 attempts in the Champions League.

With Zenit unlikely to catch Chelsea or Juventus in the qualification spots, this could be an opportunity for the Russians to secure a Europa League spot and extend their stay in Europe this term.

For Malmo, they'll be keen to avoid an unwanted record - going seven consecutive Champions League games without a goal would equal the worst-ever run any team has managed in the competition's history.
