Champions League Matchday 6: Previews & how to watch Tuesday’s games on BT Sport

The final round of Champions League group-stage fixtures begins on Tuesday evening and there's no shortage of blockbuster ties across Europe as the last 16 looms large.

Man City, Liverpool and PSG have already secured safe passage to the next round while AC Milan, Atletico and Borussia Dortmund are all looking to avoid dropping into the Europa League.

It's job done for Manchester City in the Champions League as Pep Guardiola's men secured top spot a fortnight ago with what felt like a landmark victory over Paris Saint-Germain, exacting revenge for the reverse fixture defeat in the French capital.

It means Man City have the option of rotating for the trip to Leipzig on one of two early Tuesday kick-offs and it's an option Guardiola may well take up given the gruelling December schedule that awaits the defending Premier League champions.

Having played two already, Man City still have six games remaining this month in what promises to be a fierce three-way battle for the Premier League title between themselves, Chelsea and Liverpool. 

Guardiola's men enjoyed a fruitful weekend domestically with a 3-1 win over Watford that saw them claim top spot in the table. Bernardo Silva scored twice in the win at Vicarage Road and the on-fire Portugal international could be one who is rested in Germany.

John Stones and Nathan Ake may come in to the XI to deputise Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias' first-choice defensive partnership while the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and even youngsters Cole Palmer and Jason McAtee will hope to feature.

Opponents RB Leipzig are in turmoil and will host Guardiola's men without a full-time coach having parted ways with Jesse Marsch after only five months in charge.

The Germans slipped to 11th in the table after a third successive Bundesliga defeat at the weekend but still have a chance to qualify for the Europa League should they equal or better Club Brugge's result in Paris.

It has to go down as a disappointment. Paris Saint-Germain, for all their glitz, glamour and Lionel Messi, could not topple Manchester City to finish top of Group A and will enter the last 16 as a non-seeded team meaning they could draw the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

It's not an ideal start to a European campaign in which the expectation is higher than ever from PSG's Qatari ownership for the Parisiens to take home the trophy.

While they still sit top of Ligue 1 by nine points, PSG haven't enjoyed the best preparation for Tuesday's game against Club Brugge.

Mauricio Pochettino's side had to rely on a 92nd-minute equaliser from Georginio Wijnaldum to rescue a point away at Lens after Keylor Navas' howler in goal had allowed the hosts to take a shock lead.

It will be interesting to see whether Pochettino allows the Costa Rica goalkeeper to keep his place for the visit of Club Brugge or whether Gianluigi Donnarumma will come in to the starting XI.

With nothing points-wise to play for, it could also be an opportunity for Pochettino to shuffle the pack and Mauro Icardi will be among those pushing for a start against the team PSG could only draw against in Matchday 1.

The visitors though have plenty to play for though and head to Paris knowing that should they better RB Leipzig's result against Man City, they'll extend their European campaign with a Europa League place.

One of the Champions League's most intriguing groups comes to a climax on Tuesday night with one knockout spot going between three teams.

In another rematch of the 2005 and 2007 finals, AC Milan will host Liverpool at the San Siro looking to qualify for the Champions League knockouts for the first time since the 2013/14 season.

It was a task that looked mightily unlikely after Matchday 3, with three defeats from three leaving Stefano Pioli's side pointless and rock-bottom of Group B.

Yet a draw at home to Porto and a dramatic late winner away at Atletico Madrid, courtesy of Junior Messias' first goal for the club, has given Milan fans hope of making it through.

The Italian giants host Liverpool on four points, one point behind Porto and level with Atletico who play one another in Portugal. Should that clash at the Estadio do Dragao end in a draw and Milan pull off an impressive win over Liverpool, then it's Pioli's men who will sneak into the knockout stages.

It will be a tough ask against a strong Liverpool side though, who are one of only three teams to have won all five of their group-stage matches.

However Milan, who sit top of Serie A, may be given some hope with Jurgen Klopp's team selection. Liverpool are two games into a nine-game December schedule and surely will look at this as an opportunity to rotate ahead of the busy festive fixture period.

It's a Champions League glamour tie at the Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid play host to Inter Milan on Tuesday night in the Spanish capital.

The almightiest of all shock defeats at home to Sheriff Tiraspol in Matchday 2 aside, Real are through to the knockout stages having claimed victory in their remaining four matches.

Inter started the campaign slowly with a point from their opening two, yet have won all three since and are also safely through to the last 16 of the competition.

What's yet to be decided is top spot and should Inter pull off an impressive win away at Carlo Ancelotti's Real, the seeded place in the knockout rounds is theirs.

Both teams enter this one in impressive form. Simone Inzaghi's side have won five from five in all competitions including impressive Serie A victories over Napoli and Roma to lift themselves within a point of top spot in the table. 

It's seven straight in all competitions for Ancelotti's men though and Real stretched their lead at La Liga's summit to eight points after a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.

So something's got to give at the home of the competition's most successful side. Will Real down the defending Serie A champions Inter in Madrid? Or will Inter get revenge on the Spanish giants for a 1-0 loss in Matchday 1?

One knockout stage spot from Group B is up for grabs and Porto and Atletico meet in what could be a winner-takes-all clash at the Estadio do Dragao.

With Porto on five points and Atletico and Milan tied on four, it's all to play for to determine who enters the last 16 along with Liverpool this campaign.

The Portuguese giants know it's in their hands with a win guaranteeing them a knockout spot but a draw, couples with a Milan win at home to Liverpool, eliminates them.

Atletico, after a damaging 1-0 defeat to Milan on home turf a fortnight ago, must win and hope Milan don't get anything from their clash against Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

Viewers on Tuesday night may anticipate a tense affair between two of the competition's more tactically-aware managers - Sergio Conceicao and Diego Simeone.

Indeed the reverse fixture in Madrid on the opening matchday ended in a goalless draw with both sides mustering just three shots on target between them.

Yet with so much to play for and so many permutations to work out, it promises to be a dramatic evening as Group B reaches it's climax on BT Sport.

After briefly threatening to create the most remarkable of Champions League stories, Sheriff Tiraspol's exit from the competition was confirmed a fortnight ago with defeat at home to Real Madrid.

The Moldovan newcomers had won two from two, including an incredible 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in Matchday 2, to begin their first group-stage campaign.

Yet three defeats since then have confirmed the minnows will take no further part in Europe's elite competition this season, though Shakhtar's loss to Inter in Matchday 5 confirmed Sheriff will extend their European campaign into the Europa League.

So there's not much more than pride to play for in Kiev, where Shakhtar continue to call home due to the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region where they originate from.

The Ukrainians will at least look to finish a largely miserable group-stage campaign on a high though and get revenge on what was a humiliating 2-0 loss in Matchday 1.

It's been considerably rosier in the Ukrainian Premier League at least. Shakhtar sit top on goal difference and have won eight on the bounce including a 6-1 demolition of Lviv on Friday night.

Five games in, few would have expected Ajax to hold a 100 percent record in the Champions League in what appeared a wide-open Group C. 

But that's exactly how it's transpired with the Dutch side conquering all before them and earning a seeded place in the Champions League last 16 as a result.

Key to the run has been the outstanding form of Sebastien Haller, whose nine goals in the Champions League so far is matched only by Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski.

The former West Ham forward began the campaign with a four-goal haul in a 5-1 demolition away at Sporting and the Portuguese giants will be quaking in their boots should Haller line up against them on Tuesday night.

Sporting are safely through to the Champions League last 16 themselves after an impressive win over Borussia Dortmund in Matchday 5 a fortnight ago.

Ruben Amorim's side sit joint-top of the Primeira Liga after 13 matches and head to the Dutch capital in sparkling form having won 12 straight matches in all competitions.

That winning streak includes a 3-1 Lisbon derby victory over Benfica on Friday night and even with nothing to play for, Amorim will want to continue the momentum his men have built up in recent weeks.

"What do you expect when you appoint a referee whose match-fixed before to Germany's biggest match?" was Jude Bellingham's response to the penalty conceded by his Borussia Dortmund team against Bayern Munich at the weekend.

The spot-kick, scored by ex-Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski, proved to be the winning goal in a 3-2 victory and Bellingham was left less-than-impressed by the decision to award the penalty by Felix Zwayer. 

Zwayer was involved in a match-fixging scandal in 2005 where 2.Bundesliga referee Robert Hoyzer accepted bribes to fix a string of matches. Zwayer assisted him in one particular match where he accepted a bribe and was part of a group of four officials who later came forward to inform the German football association of Hoyzer's match-fixing.

So it's with a sense of real injustice ringing in the Dortmund players' ears that they play host to Besiktas looking to end a disappointing Champions League campaign on a high.

Marco Rose's side were condemned to a Europa League place with a 3-1 defeat away at Sporting last time out but should expect to defeat a Besiktas team who are the only side not to collect a single point from five matches this 2021/22 campaign.

The Turkish champions are enduring a poor season both on the continent and domestically and slipped to ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after a 1-1 draw at Kasimpasa at the weekend - their fourth game without a win in all competitions.
