The complete guide to the Champions League: How will the tournament work? Where are the matches being played? And how did we leave it?

It feels an awfully long time since Paris Saint-Germain saw off Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid knocked out holders Liverpool in dramatic fashion.

But the wait for Champions League football is finally over because Europe's premier cup competition is back!

A summer tournament will take centre stage throughout August, and the knockout format is sure to serve up some thrilling contests, with every match, as ever, live and exclusive on BT Sport.

Here, we'll answer all your burning questions, including: when will the matches take place, how will the format of the tournament work and, crucially, which teams are still in the hunt for glory?

What will the new structure look like?

The remaining matches will be settled across a 17-day festival of football, that will take us from the four outstanding last-16 ties on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 August right the way through to the final on Sunday 23 August.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will all be single-legged knockout ties across a 12-day mini tournament.

The quarter-finals will see one match a day from Wednesday 12 to Saturday 15, with the semi-finals scheduled for Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 of August.

The 2020 Champions League final is set for Sunday 23 August and will be made available for free on the BT Sport app, BTSport.com and our YouTube channel.

Where will the matches take place?

The second legs of the four remaining last-16 ties are all set to take place as originally planned at the home team’s ground.

So Juventus will welcome Lyon (agg 0-1), Napoli will travel to Barcelona (agg 1-1), Bayern Munich will host Chelsea (agg 3-0) and Manchester City await Real Madrid (agg 2-1)at the Etihad Stadium after the British government announced selected sports stars will be exempt from quarantine requirements when visiting the U.K.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will all be played in Lisbon across the 12-day mini-tournament featuring two empty stadiums in Portugal’s capital – Benfica’s Estadio da Luz and Sporting CP’s Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The final, originally set to take place at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium, will be played at the Estadio da Luz, with the 2021 showpiece heading to Turkey.

Lisbon was the losing candidate in May 2018 when UEFA initially selected Istanbul to host the 2020 Champions League final.

How did we leave it?

Atletico Madrid (defeated Liverpool 4-2 on aggregate), PSG (beat Dortmund 3-2 on aggregate), Atalanta (eased past Valencia 8-4 on aggregate) and RB Leipzig (saw off Tottenham 4-0 on aggregate) are already qualified for the quarter-finals.

Those four are awaiting the victors of the other four second leg matches, of which three are finely poised.

Pep Guardiola's side are 2-1 up against 13-time winners Real Madrid after two late goals turned the first leg on it’s head at the Santiago Bernabeu as City chase their maiden Champions League crown.

Fellow Premier League outfit Chelsea were humbled 3-0 by a rampant Bayern at Stamford Bridge however. The Blues will need another famous night at the Allianz Arena if they are to upset the odds and overcome the Bundesliga champions.

Barcelona host Napoli having drawn 1-1 at the Stadio San Paolo, with the Spanish giants looking to put the disappointment of losing the La Liga title behind them.

While Lyon take a 1-0 lead to Turin after a shock first-leg result against the Serie A champions, with Cristiano Ronaldo and co having some work to do.
