Rangers vs PSV match preview

Ibrox has already seen a European night for the ages this season after Rangers overcame Union Saint-Gilloise and a two-goal first-leg defeat to reach the play-offs.

Roared on by a deafening home support, they overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit for the first time in Europe in scenes reminiscent of last season when their famous atmosphere roused spirited performances in the Europa League.

PSV will provide a stern test with a place in the group stages up for the grabs. The Dutch side eliminated Monaco in the previous round and have made the perfect start to the new Eredivisie season.

Managed by former Manchester United and Netherlands forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, they will arrive in Glasgow full of confidence after a superb start to the new campaign.

After beating Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup, they showed their mettle in defeating Monaco and flexed their attacking prowess in thumping league wins over Emmen and Go Ahead Eagles.

19-year-old prodigy Xavi Simmons scored a brace at the weekend and former Newcastle and Barcelona forward Luuk de Jong will provide the goalscoring threat upfront.

They have already scored 19 goals this season and have seamlessly adapted to life under Van Nistelrooy.

Rangers secured a third consecutive Scottish Premiership win of the season with a routine win against St Johnstone on Saturday.

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who said he expects Ryan Kent and James Sands to return on Tuesday, saw his side get their noses in front in the first half through Malik Tillman before a flurry of second-half goals secured the victory.

Their seventh straight home win is the perfect boost ahead of their biggest game of the season so far.

“It is a big game for us, for both teams because the group stage is at stake,” Van Bronckhorst said.

“It will be good to see Ruud again - it has been a while. He has good experience of PSV through the academy to the first team. It will also be good to see Fred Rutten.

“He was my head coach for one year at Feyenoord before I took over.

“We have been involved in football for many years, but when the whistle goes, it’s game time and we need to make sure we do everything we can in the two games to go through.”

Rangers famously dispatched RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade and Braga at home in their historic run to the Europa League final.

Faced with another high-stakes clash against a European giant, the 55-time Scottish champions will need to summon the spirit of last season to put them on the brink of the group stages.
