Newcastle vs Everton match preview

Newcastle should be high on confidence after a well-earned 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s side have still only lost once in the Premier League this season and boast the division’s best defensive record with just nine goals conceded in ten games.

Everton, meanwhile, had been equally stingy at the back before their 2-0 defeat at Tottenham last weekend. The clear issue for Frank Lampard is his team’s ineffectiveness in attack, with just four goals scored in the last five matches.

The Toffees have now lost twice in a row to bring to an end an unbeaten run that suggested they may have turned a corner. 

Those defeats, as a caveat, came against Manchester United and Tottenham, and both games were relatively close. But Lampard will undoubtedly be keen for a response against Newcastle, particularly with his side now just two points above the bottom three.

For the Magpies, there is very little to be concerned about heading into Wednesday night’s fixture. They are unbeaten in their last five, scoring ten goals and conceding three, and look very much like top six contenders this season.

Given that big-money signing Alexander Isak and key man Allan Saint-Maximin both remained sidelined with injury, Howe will certainly be pleased with his side’s form. But he will be wary of another draw on Wednesday night having shared the points six times from ten games.

Another tight game looks to be on the cards in the north east with Newcastle expected to extend their undefeated run.

Newcastle vs Everton: Injuries and suspensions

Newcastle will still be without striker Isak, who will be unavailable until after the World Cup following a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury.

Allan Saint-Maximin, too, is still out with a hamstring injury, while Matt Ritchie, Karl Darlow and Emil Krafth all remain absentees.

Jonjo Shelvey returned to the squad for the draw against Manchester United and could be in contention again on Wednesday night.

Everton will welcome back Anthony Gordon after he missed the defeat at Tottenham through suspension.

Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, Nathan Patterson and Andros Townsend are all long-term absentees and won’t be available for the trip to Newcastle.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is expected to begin on the bench again after his return from injury, with substitute appearances in the Toffees’ last two matches.

As previously mentioned, Newcastle are unbeaten in their last five, winning two and drawing three.

It has been the ideal response to their only defeat of the season so far, which came at Anfield in late August after a last-minute winner from Fabio Carvalho.

And Newcastle under Howe are a far more formidable prospect at St James’ Park than in recent years. They have won two and drawn three of their five home games in the Premier League this season.

Everton’s decent run of form has been curtailed somewhat by losses to Man Utd and Tottenham, although prior to that they had gone six unbeaten in the league.

A return of five goals in the last six matches will be a worry for Lampard, as will his side’s record of just one win in five away games so far this term.

Improvements will be needed if Everton are to leave Newcastle with anything, but a solid defence has allowed them to be competitive against most teams in recent weeks.

"They've made progress. The games we had against them last season were very tight so we anticipate a similar test. 

"They've recruited well and have a very physical side. They'll be a threat in transition and on set pieces but we back ourselves at home."

Newcastle vs Everton: Last time they met

There is rarely much between these two teams and that was certainly the case when they last met, at Goodison Park in March.

Alex Iwobi scored a late, late winner for Everton, who had seen Allan sent off for a dangerous tackle on Saint-Maximin.

It proved a significant win for the hosts, moving them clear of the relegation zone, while Newcastle suffered a slight setback after their revitalisation under Howe.

Newcastle vs Everton: Players to watch

In the absence of Isak and Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson has stepped up for Newcastle.

The striker scored in his side’s emphatic 4-1 win at Fulham at the start of the month, and impressed in the 5-1 demolition of Brentford last time out at St James’ Park.

Miguel Almiron is also a man in form, scoring three goals in the wins over Fulham and Brentford and proving a real threat from the right-hand side.

For Everton, the focus will be on the defence, tested against both Man Utd and Tottenham and set for another difficult evening in Newcastle.

Jordan Pickford will be looking to put the Spurs defeat behind him after giving away the penalty which Harry Kane converted to give the hosts the lead.

Conor Coady and James Tarkowski will be seeking a clean sheet, too, as they look to impress Gareth Southgate ahead of the England squad selection for the World Cup.
