To gauge how Premier League fans are expecting the new season to play out, BT Sport commissioned a survey of over 4,000 nationally representative supporters of clubs in the top flight.

They were asked multiple choice questions about teams they support and to predict where each team will finish in the table.

Participants were also asked about other areas, including: who they feel plays the best football, who they perceive to be their team’s biggest rival and which club is the ‘biggest’.

The results show that those polled consider reigning champions Man City favourites for the 2022-23 Premier League title, with Liverpool close behind.

Of the 4,036 people who took part, 47% believe City will again go on to lift the title and be crowned champions of England for the fifth time in six seasons.

Liverpool, who came so close to toppling Pep Guardiola’s side last term, are fancied to finish runners-up again, with 43% of participants expecting a second-placed finish.

Chelsea have been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in England international Raheem Sterling among others. However, 35% think they will finish third and don't believe they have enough to break the City-Liverpool duopoly.

Interestingly, 21% of participants think Arsenal will break into the top four while 18% expect Tottenham to finish fifth.

At the other end of the table, it’s bad news for the newly promoted sides, with all three predicted to go straight back down.

A fifth of those polled expect Nottingham Forest to finish rock bottom in their first season in the top flight in 23 years, with 14% predicting Bournemouth and Fulham to finish 18th and 19th, respectively.

The survey also asked which player will be awarded the coveted Player of the Season award, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah coming out on top.

Of the 4,000 fans, 20% believe the prolific Egyptian will scoop the top prize after picking up the Golden Boot last season. Erling Haaland is also tipped for the gong by 12%, while 10% expect Kevin de Bruyne to go back-to-back.

Man Utd’s Cristiano Ronaldo (7%) and Tottenham’s Harry Kane (7%) make up the top five.

BT Sport is your exclusive home of the Champions League and Europe’s premier club competition was also on the agenda.

Our survey reveals that fans believe Man City will finally break their duck and win the Champions League, with Liverpool expected to contend also.

Chelsea (3%) and Tottenham (2%) are the other English sides competing in the competition, although they are not heavily fancied.

BT Sport will show 52 games from the upcoming Premier League season.
