Friday 17 September
Newcastle 1-1 Leeds
Allan Saint-Maximin’s brilliance failed to spare Steve Bruce further punishment as Newcastle had to come from behind to draw with Leeds.
The 24-year-old Frenchman blasted home a superb equaliser to cancel out Raphinha’s opener on a night when sections of the home support among a crowd of 50,407 at St James’ Park once again chanted for the 60-year-old to go.
A 1-1 draw at the end of a pulsating encounter left both sides still awaiting a first Premier League win of the campaign and with Bruce knowing his critics are far from placated, but equally that his players are playing for him.
Saturday 18 September
Wolves 0-2 Brentford
Ivan Toney inspired Brentford to their first away win in the top flight for 74 years with a 2-0 victory at Wolves.
Toney almost moved to Molineux from Northampton as a teenager in 2014, the move collapsing when he failed a medical, so it was perhaps inevitable he would star as Wolves slumped to a fourth straight home Premier League defeat.
The 25-year-old had a goal, an assist and two disallowed in the first half alone as a clinical Brentford side got their first top-flight win since beating Leeds 2-1 in 1947, with Bryan Mbeumo also on target.
A second-half red card for Shandon Baptiste threatened to spoil Brentford’s afternoon, but, even though Wolves finished on top, they failed to score for a fourth league match out of five this season.
Norwich 1-3 Watford
Ismaila Sarr struck twice as Norwich’s losing start to the Premier League season extended to five games following a 3-1 defeat to Watford at Carrow Road.
The Hornets’ record signing, who had not scored since the opening-day win over Aston Villa, proved too good for the Norwich defence with his brace putting the game beyond the hosts.
The visitors had taken an early lead, which was the first sign of any cracks in the Norwich defence, as Emmanuel Dennis headed past Tim Krul after being marked poorly in the 17th minute.
Teemu Pukki struck his, and Norwich’s, second Premier League goal of the season to level the contest when he beat the offside trap before sending the ball over Ben Foster 10 minutes before half-time.
However, in the second half, Watford took a decisive lead in the 63rd minute with Sarr beating Grant Hanley to the ball before flicking it into the net and then being first to a parried shot from Josh King to tap home for his second 10 minutes from time.
Burnley 0-1 Arsenal
Martin Odegaard’s first-half free-kick clinched Arsenal a 1-0 win at Burnley, whose winless home Premier League run was extended to 13 matches.
Norway international Odegaard curled home the only goal in the 30th minute to further ease the pressure on Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.
Arteta’s side clinched a second successive top-flight victory, but they were indebted to a controversial VAR intervention, which Burnley felt robbed them of a second-half penalty.
Referee Anthony Taylor initially pointed to the spot when Burnley substitute Matej Vydra went down under Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s challenge, only to change his mind after watching the replay.
Manchester City 0-0 Southampton
A near-capacity crowd failed to inspire Manchester City as the champions were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Southampton at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side might even have felt relieved to claim a point after referee Jon Moss overturned decisions to award Southampton a penalty and send Kyle Walker off in the second half.
Statistically City dominated but lacked their normal cutting edge, perhaps underling Guardiola’s point in midweek that his players would go into the Saturday encounter tired after their Champions League exertions.
Raheem Sterling thought he had snatched victory with a last-gasp strike but the flag was raised for offside and VAR confirmed the decision.
Liverpool 3-0 Crystal Palace
Record-breaking Sadio Mane’s 100th Liverpool goal set Jurgen Klopp’s side on the way to 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace which took them top of the table.
Mane became the first player in Premier League history to score against the same opponent in nine consecutive matches, beating Robin van Persie’s eight in a row against Stoke
His close-range strike just before half-time also made him the 18th man to bring up a century of goals for the club in his 224th appearance.
Mohamed Salah’s rich form continued as his volley 12 minutes from time meant he has only failed to score in one of his six games this season with a sumptuous left-footed volley from substitute Naby Keita finishing proceedings with a flourish.
Aston Villa 3-0 Everton
Aston Villa’s second-half blitz downed Everton as the hosts ran riot to clinch an impressive 3-0 win.
They scored three times in nine minutes with Matty Cash, Lucas Digne’s own goal and Leon Bailey easing them to victory at Villa Park.
The hosts could even afford the luxury of keeping record buy Emi Buendia on the bench after he arrived back from Croatia, where he had been training to avoid quarantining following international duty with Argentina, just hours before.
Sunday 19 September
Brighton vs Leicester, KO 2pm
Brighton host Leicester with the wind in their sails on Sunday, as The Seagulls head into the clash amid their best ever start to a top-flight season.
Graham Potter's men had already recorded the same total of wins they had in the last 19 matches in 2020/21 before last weekend's 1-0 victory away at Brentford - courtesy of Leandro Trossard's late winner - lifted them to sixth in the table.
Last season's 'Kings of Expected Goals' suffered from a lack of a proven goalscorer last term with no-one taking the chances the men behind them created so consistently.
This term Neal Maupay was looked upon to deliver but after two in two, the Frenchman has drawn blanks and was poor against his former club last weekend.
With Danny Welbeck - never a prolific scorer - Brighton's other option up top, Potter is counting on the likes of midfielders Trossard and Alex Mac Allister to weigh in.
They face perhaps their sternest test of the season so far when FA Cup holders Leicester visit The Amex in the fifth game of the new campaign.
Brendan Rodgers' men have endured a mixed start to 2021/22 though, with two wins and two defeats - including a 4-1 humbling at West Ham.
The Foxes boss will hope an impressive top-flight record against the south coast side continues - Leicester have never lost a Premier League game against Brighton in eight meetings.
West Ham vs Manchester United, KO 2pm on NOW via BT TV
Two appearances and three goals later, it's safe to say Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United homecoming has got off to a flying start.
The 36-year-old, returning after 12 seasons away from Old Trafford, netted twice against Newcastle in his second United debut before scoring the opener away at Young Boys as his new side slumped to a disappointing Champions League defeat.
Now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will continue his hot streak when Man United visit the London Stadium to take on West Ham.
The pressure is on the Norwegian coach after a summer in which Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Ronaldo all arrived - surely bolstering The Red Devils to the extent where they should be Premier League title-challengers.
Yet after three wins and a draw in the league, Tuesday's defeat in Bern - with the winner scored courtesy of a poor Jesse Lingard back-pass - brought Man United back down to earth.
Lingard will hope to dust himself down and give a better account of himself when he takes on the team where we revitalised his career last season during a sensational loan spell.
But The Hammers, managed by former Man United coach David Moyes, are no light touch with an unbeaten record of two wins and two defeats to begin the campaign.
Moyes will hope to end Man United's incredible run of 28 away league games without defeat come Sunday, which stands as the longest in top-flight history.
He will have to do it without Michail Antonio however, with the in-form forward seeing red against Southampton last time out.
Tottenham vs Chelsea, KO 4.30pm on NOW via BT TV
The tenth and final game of the Premier League weekend comes late on Sunday afternoon in what is a huge London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The hosts looked to be settling into life under Nuno Espirito Santo well with three consecutive 1-0 wins but in their fourth clash, another in the capital, the wheels well-and-truly came off.
Tottenham went down to 10 men after Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha drove Japhet Tanganga to violence having wound up the Spurs defender with his full array of tricks and flicks down the wing.
Palace would make the man advantage count and run out 3-0 winners thanks to Zaha's penalty and Odsonne Edouard's brace to condemn Santo to his first defeat as Tottenham manager.
It doesn't get any easier, either. Tottenham play host to an imperious-looking Chelsea team who've won all their games so far, bar a 1-1 draw at Liverpool when they played the entire second half with just 10 men.
Chelsea's performances have not been up to scratch in their previous two games - against Aston Villa and Zenit St Petersburg. Yet with Romelu Lukaku up top, they now have the calibre of forward capable of bailing them out with goals even when they don't dazzle.
The Belgian has scored four times already since rejoining The Blues and after seeing Edouard and Co run riot on Tottenham's defence on Saturday, will fancy his chances of adding to that tally when Chelsea travel to north London.
