Sex Education season two: Why we can't wait to get back to Moordale

Sex Education was the surprise breakout comedy of 2019, with over 40 million Netflix users tuning in around the world when the series launched in January.

Starring Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, Emma Mackey, Aimee-Lou Wood and Kedar Williams-Stirling, the series inspired a million memes, endless quotable moments and arguably the finest ‘no context’ Twitter account ever created.

Season 1 followed the story of socially awkward teenager Otis Milburn (Butterfield), his sex therapist mum (Anderson), his best pal Eric (Gatwa), his school crush Maeve Wiley (Mackey) and the pupils and staff of Moordale Secondary.

BT TV described season one as the "naughtiest, rudest and most outrageous new show of 2019" and “simultaneously incredibly funny and moving". The show's return in the New Year is one of the most eagerly awaited TV moments of 2020.

When is Sex Education season two released?

Speaking to Thrillist about the new episodes, writer Laurie Nunn said: "Series one is very much Otis's journey and I think it will be again. If we're lucky enough to get a series two we will always come back to Otis. He's a fantastic leading character.

On the subject of different cast dynamics in the second season, she added: "I love the idea of getting different characters together – if not together in a relationship, just together in the space. Like, I never thought those two characters would have a conversation and there will be loads of opportunity for that."

What happened at the end of season one?

Otis and Maeve's will-they, won't-they relationship ended in a 'won't they' state as Maeve witnessed Otis kissing Ola. Otis finally overcame his personal sexual repression thanks to the snog with Ola, but will he be happy with his new girlfriend or is he still going to be pining for Maeve?

After spending the first season bullying Eric, Adam's aggression turned into passion and the pair shared enjoyed a sexual liaison during detention. However, before the relationship could develop any further, Adam was away to military school by his father and headteacher Mr Groff. Is there any hope for the pair to reunite in season two?

Meanwhile, despite promising Otis that she was going to end her relationship with Ola's father Jakob, she couldn’t stop herself from sharing another moment of passion in the final episode. Will the pair be able to keep their hands off each other in season two?

Season two teasers revealed

Netflix have revealed a few clues about the storyline developments for our favourite characters in season two.

• Late bloomer Otis must master his newly discovered sexual urges in order to progress with his girlfriend Ola whilst also dealing with his now strained relationship with Maeve.
• Moordale Secondary is in the throes of a Chlamydia outbreak, highlighting the need for better sex education at the school and new kids come to town who will challenge the status quo.
• Maeve and Aimee’s BFF relationship is stronger than ever since Aimee ditched ‘the Untouchables’. 
• Eric notices his new-found self-confidence attracting unfamiliar kinds of attention.
• Adam is at military school, still conflicted by his feelings for Eric.
• Lily has hit pause on her sexual endeavours to focus on her creative talents and finds a new found friend in Ola. 
• Jackson is forced to flex his mental rather than physical muscle and is still buckling under the pressure from his parents to succeed. 
• Jean and Jakob's relationship is discovered and they have to learn how to operate as a blended family. 
•  Jean forms an unlikely connection with Mrs Groff and a friendship between the two women begins to form

Meet the cast of Sex Education

Otis - Played by Asa Butterfield

Jean – Played by Gillian Anderson

Sex therapist Jean raises her son Otis in an excruciatingly open household – they’re surrounded by manuals and videos, and no subject is off limits.

But what Jean considers a healthy environment for her teenage son could actually be having the opposite effect.

Maeve - Played by Emma Mackey

The school’s bad-girl-in-residence Maeve has a troubled home life and money worries.

So when she realises how lucrative Otis’s advice could be to other students, she convinces him to set up the clinic with her.

Eric – Played by Ncuti Gatwa

Otis’s gay best friend is Eric, an eternal optimist who is always trying to find ways of getting the pair in with the school’s popular crowd.

Jackson – Played by Kedar Williams-Stirling

Every school has a Mr Popular, and at Otis' school it's sports star Jackson who has most of the other pupils swooning over him.

But everything wasn’t quite as perfect as it seemed on the surface for Jackson. Not only did his sweetheart Maeve have eyes for someone else, he also struggled with anxiety and the huge amount of pressure mounted on him by his parents.

Adam – Connor Swindells

The headmaster’s son and a school bully, Adam was the most intriguing character in season one and his relationship with Eric was one that fans of the series latched onto.

Beneath his tough front was a much more sensitive boy and when he was sent to military school at the end of season one it was a heartbreaking moment.

Amy – Played by Aimee-Lou Wood

Being popular was Amy's school persona in season and one she wanted to keep at all costs.

However, she ditched her relationship with Adam and her snobbish friends in season one, forming a close bond with Maeve.

BT TV's review of season one

A classic teen comedy, which holds nothing back as it dives into the messy world of teenage bedrooms (as well as bathrooms, cafeterias and school grounds).

Sex Education isn't gritty or aiming for realism. The show blends British references (Curly Wurlys, Nesquik) with a very American-looking high school (all bleachers and sports blazers) but the characters and script hit the spot every time in capturing the fumbling and clumsiness of school life.

Navigating through the anxieties and strains of growing up in the social media age, Sex Education deals sensitively with masculinity, LGBT issues and all the insecurities of teenage life that everyone from 16 to 60 will recognise.
