After Life

How can I watch it?

After Life season 1 is streaming on Netflix now. All six episodes of After Life series 2 are streaming on Netflix from Friday, April 24.

What’s it about?

Set in the small fictitious town of Tambury, the comedy-drama series follows Tony (Ricky Gervais), a writer for the local newspaper whose life is upended after his wife dies from cancer. 

In series 2, whilst still struggling with immense grief for his wife, we see Tony try to become a better friend to those around him. Each grappling with their own problems and only to be intensified by the looming threat of the local newspaper being shut down.

Will the town’s local Am-Dram show lift everyone’s spirits?

Why watch it?

After Life was praised by critics for its portrayal of grief, with CNN’s media critic Brian Lowry writing that the mix of comedy alongside grief in Gervais’ script makes for a ‘bittersweet and melancholy series’.

The Good Place

The Good Place seasons 1-4 are streaming on Netflix now.

What’s it about?

Emmy-nominated comedy starring Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, who arrives at the Good Place after her death. Determined to stay, she tries to become a better person. The show also stars Ted Danson as architect Michael who oversees the town.

The Good Place is created by Michael Schur - who co-created Golden Globe winning comedy Parks and Recreation.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix now. Season 6 is coming Saturday, March 28.

What’s it about?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the lives of an eclectic group of detectives in a New York police precinct, including one slacker (Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg) who is forced to shape up when he gets a new boss - the serious and stern Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher).

Why watch it?

The show was cancelled by US network Fox after five seasons, but it was picked up by NBC - the home of iconic comedies such as The Office and Parks and Recreation - for a sixth season after uproar from fans. Good news for B99 fans - season 7 is coming, too!

Grace and Frankie

What’s it about?

Elegant Grace (Jane Fonda) and eccentric Frankie (Lily Tomlin) are a pair of frenemies whose lives are turned upside down - and permanently intertwined - when they find out that their husbands are not just colleagues - but they’ve also been romantically involved for the last twenty years.

The Netflix Original series was co-created by Marta Kauffman - one half of the team that created Friends.

Lovesick

GLOW

What’s it about?

From the team behind Orange is the New Black, GLOW follows a group of misfits including Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) and Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), who reinvent themselves as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling in 1980s LA.

Season 3 of GLOW was praised by critics, with The Independent calling it the show’s 'brightest and best [season] yet', giving it four out of five stars, while The Guardian described it as 'gleeful and outrageous', also giving it four stars.

Master of None

What’s it about?

Comic Aziz Ansari and writer Alan Yang are the creators of this Netflix-original comedy, which is loosely based on Ansari's real-life experiences. He plays the role of Dev, who tries to jump-start his acting career and elevate his dating game with help from his eclectic group of friends.

Master of None has been an awards season darling for the streamer, picking up a ton of gongs including Best Writing and Best Acting in both the Emmys and Golden Globes.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
