The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself season 2: Will the Netflix young adult fantasy series return? The cast give their verdict
BT TV talks exclusively to the cast of the Netflix fantasy series The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself about a possible second season.
A twisted and bloody tale about witches, family, identity and romance, the coming-of-age adventure has been getting great reviews from critics and fans since it launched.
Inspired by Sally Green's Half Bad book series and adapted for the screen by Giri/Haji writer Joe Barton, the series has potential to run for many more seasons.
Here is everything we know so far about season 2…
Will there be a Bastard Son and the Devil Himself season 2?
A second season isn’t confirmed, but the teen fantasy series has made it into the UK Top 10 most-watched shows on its opening weekend of release on Netflix.
"I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of these characters. There is so much more to tell with them," Nadia Parkes, who plays Annalise, told BT TV.
The show is based on Sally Green's Young Adult novel series Half Bad, which has a series of sequels and potential new storylines for the show to follow in future seasons.
Parkes added: "I don’t want to read ahead because I don’t want to get attached to anything that might not happen. [Writer] Joe [Barton] really takes this show on its own journey. I really want to let it unfold the way that it wants to."
Emilien Vekemans, who plays Gabriel, added that he hopes the dynamic with Nathan, Annalise and Gabriel can be explored further.
"The love triangle we have, it’s something… it’s just the beginning," said the French star.
"There’s something more that could come from that. I’m really excited to see where he goes with that and make that interesting."
Jay Lycurgo, who plays Nathan, argued that there are "infinite possibilities" for a season 2
"There are so many more characters we still haven’t event met. A lot of questions are answered in the show, but there is so much left," said Lycurgo.
Isobel Jesper Jones, who plays show villain Jessica, added: "The whole things is so layered. There is so much happening under the surface with Jessica. There are so many things I would love to do with that character.
"We’re all really excited of touch wood – it’s not over."
What happened at the end of season 1?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead*
In the finale Nathan discovered that his father, the mysterious blood witch Marcus Edge, might not be the big bad villain that we’d all be led to believe.
Marcus revealed that he had been absent to save Nathan, but the Fairborn witches had still killed his mum.
Annalise slowly gained control of her own powers in the finale and fought off Jessica. Despite utilising her shape-shifting skills, Annalise was able to pull her apart and destroy Jessica’s powers… for now.
Gabriel, Nathan and Annalise were reunited, but the loved-up trio didn’t have long to enjoy their company as Soul freezes Gabriel and Annalise and comes after Nathan in the forest.
Soul declares that he will kill Nathan and his father Marcus, but before he can capture the young witch, Marcus takes Nathan aside for a father-son bonding session.
Marcus saves Nathan’s life by giving him some of his own blood and challenges him to take down Soul, handing him his knife.
After Nathan stabs Soul, he frees Gabriel and Annalise, who jump into action against Soul. In the end, the killed by “his own blood” prophecy turns out to be about Soul and Annalise rather than Marcus and Nathan.
So Soul was the true villain of season 1, not Marcus.
Annalise uses her powers to bring down Soul, pulling apart his body with tears in her eyes.
Although, Nathan, Gabriel and Annalise are safe, there are lots of unanswered questions and cliffhangers for season 2.
- Jessica finds the secret portal to Mercury’s home and the witch offers to help her gain revenge on the trio who robbed her of her powers
- Marcus is still alive and his intentions are unclear
- The Fairborns and Blood witches are still at war and Nathan, Gabriel and Annalise are not short on enemies
- Nathan hears Soul’s heartbeat pumping and his eyes suggest that he is tempted to eat his enemy’s heart and gain all his powers – but as we saw with Soul, the thirst for more power is a dangerous game
