Hanna is one of Amazon Prime Video’s most talked about and thrilling original series.

Based on the 2011 Saoirse Ronan film, the series is about a young woman with special skills and elite training, who after growing up in the wilderness with her father finds herself on the run from the CIA.

The title role is played by newcomer Esme Creed-Miles, while The Killing star Mireille Enos plays CIA operative Marissa Wiegler, who spent most of the first season hunting down Hanna and her father Erik (Joel Kinnaman).

After getting the prize spot of being previewed at the 2019 Super Bowl, it was no surprise that Prime Video announced a second season only days after the season one launch.

Ahead of the show’s highly anticipated return, here is everything you need to know as the Hanna story races onwards…

When is Hanna season 2 released?

Esme Creed-Miles is back kicking in eight new episodes, all available now Prime Video.

Season 2 trailer revealed

The first full trailer for season two reveals some exciting new developments and big changes since we last saw Hanna.

Utrax has moved to a new home called 'The Meadows' and for an unexplained reason, Hanna is rejoining the programme.

However, rather than submitting to the training and rules of Utrax, it looks like Hanna is about to take on the programme from the inside. With explosive result.

First images of the new cast for season two have also been revealed including Dermot Mulroney as new Utrax boss John Carmichael and Anthony Welsh as the "confident and socially skilled Utrax operative Leo Garner.

Speaking exclusively to BT TV about his role in the new series, Dermot Mulroney said: "Hanna two for me, the whole experience, has just grown exponentially. I got the part, watched season one, realised what a quality show I was joining.

"Then I just had an incredible time shooting in the English countryside and Barcelona. It’s been an outstanding experience for me throughout.

"It was great fun to play an ultra-spy, who within a government agency was able to concoct this diabolical programme and see it to the culmination."

Mireille Enos believes that the new season is particularly timely for global events happening in 2020.

"On the one hand there is this huge conversation in season two about women and their identities," she told BT TV.

"How, in this coming of age moment, they have to answer the questions of nature versus nurture. Are they going to be the person that society tells them to be or are they going to follow their own intuition and how to untangle that?

"And also - I don’t want to be too heavy-handed - but there are a lot of conversations right now about weighty government and unchecked government, and the danger of that. I think Hanna touches on that as well."

Will there be a season three?

Amazon Prime Video confirmed on Monday, July 13th, 2020 that Hanna would be returning for season three.

Writer David Farr confirmed exclusively to BT TV that he had already begun planning a third season.

"I have mapped [season three] out in my head. But we’ll have to wait and see," said Farr.

"I don’t see Hanna as an endless thing. I do see it having quite a specific story. But it’s pretty obvious when you get to the end episode eight, you can see there is something else is in my imagination."

The ending of season two leaves plenty of doors open for further adventures, but for Farr the biggest current obstacle to further episodes is the global Covid-19 crisis.

He added: "Where we are at the moment with the virus, it’s a bit unclear about what is possible, we’ll just have to wait and see. But Amazon have been incredibly supportive up to now, they’ve been lovely."

What happened in season one?

In season one, we were introduced to 15-year-old Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) who was raised in total seclusion in the remote woods of Eastern Europe.

She had spent her entire young life training to fight those who hunt her and her mercenary father, Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman). Her survivalist skills were finally tested when she and Erik were separated and hunted down by a rogue CIA operative, Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos) and her team of agents.

Hanna had no choice but to embark on a perilous journey alone across Europe, as she sought answers about her past and navigated an ever-deepening conspiracy - one that could be the undoing of both her and her father.

The season one ending explained

The nail-biting conclusion to season one saw Hanna and Erik return to Utrax, the programme that created Hanna, which they had previously believed was shut down.

At the rebooted Utrax Regenesis, dozens of new female super-soldiers were being trained with the same abilities as Hanna. They attempted to rescue this new dangerous collective, but only one – recruit 249 Clara (Yasmin Monet Prince), broke from the group to join Hanna.

CIA leader Sawyer (Khalid Abdall) and a team of soldiers evacuated the rest of the Utrax trainees and Dr Roland Kunek (Noah Taylor), before attempting to hunt down Hanna, Erik and Clara.

The trio successfully killed the soldiers, but were held at gunpoint by Sawyer. However, his personal rivalry with Marissa came back to haunt him as she arrived just in time to shoot him and let the fugitives escape.

Erik didn’t survive long after they escaped Utrax due to the series of wounds and injuries he suffered along the way. And at the end of the series, Hanna had returned to the wilderness where she group up with her new ‘sister’ Clara.

Is Marissa no longer the villain of the series? It’s too early to make the call, but the series cleverly turned Marissa into a more nuanced, less cold-hearted character than she was in the original film, in which she was played by Cate Blanchett.

At the end of the series, she contacted the head of Utrax, Norris and confirmed the deaths of Sawyer and Erik.

The closing events helped her regain her old job, at the expense of Sawyer. But it’s not clear whether she truly feels guilt over what went on at Utrax and feels warmth to Hanna, or if Sawyer was just the bigger obstacle to her longer term ambitions

Who is in the Hanna cast?

Esme Creed-Miles and Yasmin Monet Prince will be back as Hanna and Clara, along with Mireille Enos as Marissa Wiegler.

Kinnaman won’t be returning following the death of Erik at the end of season one, but joining the case in the second season is My Best Friend’s Wedding star Dermot Mulroney.

Mulroney will play John Carmichael, who is described as a “Utrax overseer”.

Other new cast members confirmed for the second season include Anthony Welsh (Fleabag, Black Mirror), who will play Leo Garner, a “charming and calculated” part of the Utrax operations team, Cherelle Skeete (Call the Midwife) as Terri Miller, an upcoming CIA officer working with the trainers, and Severine Howell-Meri (Casualty) and Gianna Kiehl as two of the all-girl trainees.

Season two looks like it will have a focus on the new trainees and the team working with them. It will be intriguing to see how Marissa fits into the dynamic between Hanna and Utrax, after the ambiguous ending to season one.

Speaking in 2019 about the second season, writer David Farr said: "I am very much looking forward to taking Hanna on the next stage of her journey.”

"It's been a wonderful experience so far, and I feel hugely supported by NBCU, Working Title and Amazon.

"The next season will take us into a whole new imaginative world. I can't wait to explore fresh terrain for this lonely young woman who wants only to belong, but who has to fight every day just to survive."

Who is on the Hanna soundtrack?

The season one soundtrack was an exceptional eclectic collection, which included the original track Anti-Lullaby by Karen O.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer also performed the haunting Bullet with Butterfly Wings for the series.

Her band’s hit Date With The Night, also soundtracked a fight sequence in the tense and explosive seventh episode.

Other tracks from the first series included Boys Don’t Cry from The Cure, Blue Lights by Jorja Smith, you should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish and Windowlicker by Aphex Twin.
