Fans of The Walking Dead and The Boys who are looking for something new to watch this year, should be very excited for Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.

From Walking Dead mastermind Robert Kirkman, the series is based on the Skybound/Image comic created by Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley.

Invincible is an adult animated superhero show  (this is not a series for kids, trust us!) that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson, who’s just like every other guy his age - except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man.

But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

Invincible, Kirkman’s second-longest comic-book series, concluded in February 2018 after a 15-year run.

Invincible season 2 and season 3 confirmed

Amazon Prime Video has announced that the Robert Kirkman series will be back for season two.

It has also confirmed the show will return for a season 3.

“I’m extremely thankful to Amazon for the support and dedication they’ve put behind Invincible,” said Kirkman.

“The comic book is truly a love letter to a genre that Cory (Walker) and I grew up reading and loving, and it’s been a gratifying journey to watch our characters come to life again through the animated series. We’re beyond excited to continue this story for at least two more seasons.”

Kirkman revealed at New York Comic Con that fan favourite character Battle Beast will be voiced by Michael Dorn (Star Trek).

Invincible will also star Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Seth Rogen (This is the End), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Andrew Rannells (Black Monday, Girls), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Walton Goggins (Justified), Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Mae Whitman (Good Girls), Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley), Melise (The Flash), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Simpsons), Grey Griffin (Avengers Assemble), Max Burkholder (Imaginary Order).

Robert Kirkman said it was essential they pulled together an incredible cast for the series to capture the heart of the comic.

“This is a character drama, an intense character drama,” said Kirkman.

“These actors are bringing their A-game. You really have to sell what is going on in this drama.

“While we have talked about the violence, it is never violence for violence's sake. You fall in love with these characters and this story, which makes the violence more impactful. It’s a little like Walking Dead in that aspect.”

What can you expect from Invincible?

The good news for fans of the comic is that they can expect a series that captures the spirit and follows the same story and key events.

“We’ve been working very closely that it has the same flavor and same big events,” said creator Robert Kirkman at New York Comic Con.

“We’re changing some characters and adding a bit of spice in there, but everything you want to be in there will be in there.”

Talking about the comic’s extreme violence, Kirkman said that nothing would be dialled down for the TV series.

“We’re definitely not holding back on the violence at all. If anything the violence is a little bit more intense… at times a little bit more gruesome,” explained Kirkman.

“I think it’s the secret sauce of Invincible. I’ve always thought when big massive superheroes who can knock down buildings and move planets start fighting it’s a bit weird that they’re not doing substantial damage to each other. That’s a really cool realism that Invincible has.

“There are some insane graphic things happening that would happen when super-powerful people come together.”

And for viewers who have never read the comic, Kirkman teased: “If you think you saw something like this before, you haven’t.

“Even in the very first episode you will be, ‘Woah, I haven’t seen this before’.”

Previewing the series, Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly: "The idea was basically to take everything we had ever loved about the superhero genre and put it into one series. We wanted to construct a world that was so broad that, over the course of the life of the series, we could tell basically every type of superhero story that had been told and put our own spin on it.

"Sometimes it's a horror series. Sometimes it's a drama. Sometimes it's straight-up science-fiction."
