He might have grown up in the Cornish countryside, but Matthew Goode has the kind of Hollywood film career that upcoming actors could only dream of.
From starring in Netflix’s big-budget royal drama The Crown to appearing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, the 43-year-old British talent has had his fair share of A-list roles to get his teeth into.
However, Matthew admits it’s "not easy" juggling his career with his family life at times, and has turned down roles if it meant being away from wife Sophie and their three children, Matilda, Ralph and Teddie.
The Exeter-born actor - who reprised his role as Henry Talbot in the Downton Abbey film in 2019 - is back on our screens in A Discovery of Witches, coming soon to Sky Max and NOW in the UK.
Here, we take a look at Matthew Goode’s best film and TV roles - and where you might recognise him from…
A Discovery of Witches - Matthew Clairmont
Since 2018, Goode has starred in the Sky Original fantasy-romance series, A Discovery of Witches, which is based on Deborah Harkness's bestselling All Souls book trilogy.
He plays Professor Matthew Clairmont, an Oxford molecular biologist and vampire. Goode’s "infectious" chemistry with his co-star Teresa Palmer (Diana Bishop) has been praised by fans and critics alike.
Watch A Discovery of Witches Season 3 on Sky Max with a NOW Entertainment Membership from January 7.
Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now.
Downton Abbey - Henry Talbot
Goode first appeared as race car driver Henry Talbot in Downton Abbey during the show’s fifth season in 2014, as the love interest of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).
He also starred in the show’s sixth and final season, as well as the 2019 film of the same name. It’s not known whether he’ll appear in the film’s follow up, Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022).
All six seasons of Downton Abbey, and the Downton Abbey film, are streaming on Netflix.
The Crown - Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon
In 2017, Goode starred alongside Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret's husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, in season 2 of Netflix royal drama The Crown.
His role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
All four seasons of The Crown are streaming on Netflix.
The Imitation Game - Hugh Alexander
Goode starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2014 Oscar-winning historical film, The Imitation Game.
He starred as Hugh Alexander, a British Second World War cryptanalyst and chess champion.
The Imitation Game is available to watch on Netflix, as well as Sky Cinema on NOW.
Stoker - Charles Stoker
In 2013, Goode starred alongside Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman in the psychological thriller film Stoker - the first English-language film by Korean director Park Chan-wook.
Goode played Charles Stoker, as a mysterious man who was the long-lost uncle of India Stoker (Wasikowska).
Stoker is available to buy on Amazon Prime Video.
