Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux tackle Watergate in White House Plumbers
May 3 | 4 min readTV drama worthy of a Hollywood film is coming to Sky Atlantic and NOW with a heartrending reboot of Swedish classic Scenes from a Marriage.
Reimagining the 1973 TV series directed by Ingmar Bergman, it stars Jessica Chastain and Oscar Issac as a couple battling to make their marriage work again.
It looks set to be a polished piece of TV drama - find out all you need to know about the storyline and when you can see it on TV.
What is Scenes from a Marriage about?
The TV mini-series is a remake of the Swedish original from the 70s, but the themes explored are as timeless as ever.
Originally, the 1973 series traced around 10 years of a couple’s marriage from its dying days through a reconciliation and their life past that point, while a year later it was condensed into a three-hour film.
Directed by the legendary Ingmar Bergman and starring his ex-partner Liv Ullman in a role partly inspired by their own experiences, it was a classic of its time. The remake, which places the story in a modern setting, is highly anticipated.
The series will follow husband and wife Jonathan and Mira as their previously strong marriage begins to fall apart. First they split, then they reunite and try to find out whether they can love each other again.
It’s a highly emotional series that promises to be utterly compelling - especially with two big-name actors attached.
Scenes from a Marriage is directed by Hagai Levi, best known for co-creating hit series The Affair.
Who stars in Scenes from a Marriage?
The drama relies heavily on its two main characters, so signing up the right people is vital - and it looks like they’ve landed on a winning combination with Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac.
Chastain is best known for her starring roles in The Help Zero Dark Thirty. Isaac is most famous for playing Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy but has also starred in Ex Machina and in the new movie adaptation of Dune.
It’s not the first time Chastain and Isaac have played husband and wife – the pair starred in 2014 crime drama A Most Violent Year; this is their first project together since.
Chastain’s role was originally taken by Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman), but she had to exit the series over a scheduling conflict.
Other cast members include Corey Stoll (Ratched), Nicole Beharie (Little Fires Everywhere), Sunita Mani (GLOW) and Maury Ginsberg (Manifest).
