Top Boy 3 confirmed: What you need to know
May 2 | 5 min readFrom guitar-slashing Dungeons and Dragons rock to an ethereal Kate Bush classic, there is some unforgettable music and classic tracks in the Stranger Things season 4 soundtrack.
The 80s tunes remains absolutely on point and even blurs into the storyline for season 4 as *spoilers ahead* it is revealed that music is the one thing powerful enough to save victims from this year's villain – Vecna.
With songs from Stranger Things racing up the charts, we've pulled together a list of our favourite music from the series.
Our favourite songs from Stranger Things season 4
1. Detroit Rock City by Kiss – Episode 401, The Hellfire Club
Our favourite new character in season 4 of Stranger Things is Joseph Quinn’s 80s metalhead Eddie Munson. The Hellfire Club leader becomes the most-wanted man in Hawkins in season 4, but before he goes on he run we get treated to some classic glam metal.
This Kiss track soundtracks the intense game of D&D where Dustin refuses to backdown against the unlikely odds – a percussor to events later in the season.
2. Wipe Out by The Surfaris – Episode 402, Vecna's Curse
In the heartbreaking Rink-O-Mania sequence where Eleven is bullied and humiliated at the rollerdisco, this 60s pop classic is the track being played by the obnoxious DJ.
We’re not sure we’ll ever be able to enjoy the song again, without thinking about poor Eleven’s face as her façade for Mike comes crumbling down.
3. Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth – Featured in episode 404, Dear Billy
A beautiful contrast to the bloody and tense shoot-out at the Byers household, this 80s pop classic is being played by pot-lover Argyle as he comes to the rescue in his pizza truck.
The track, which reached number 1 in the UK in 1982, was about passing a Dutch cooking pot around. However, it was based on a Mighty Diamonds song, Pass the Kouchie – a kouchie being slang for cannabis pipe. Suddenly, it all makes sense why Argyle would be playing it.

4. Running up that Hill by Kate Bush – In episode 404, Dear Billy
This classic Kate Bush track ends up being the defining track of season 4 and its haunting qualities match the darker tones of the latest episodes.
Running up that Hill is Max’s favourite song and it’s only through playing the cassette on repeat through her headphones that the gang are able to help her escape the villainous Vecna.
The closing sequence of Dear Billy where Max (Sadie Sink) sprints away from Vecna with the Bush song pushing her onwards is one of the most memorable sequences in any episode of Stranger Things.
5. Quand le bien-aimé reviendra by Nicholas Dalaryrac – In episode 405, The Nina Project
The piece of opera is pumped into Hawkins Lab by Dr Brenner as he explains to Eleven the story of the classic piece. The story of Nina is based around the idea of being unable to deal with a traumatic moment and blocking it out of your memory – something that is particularly relevant to Eleven’s journey in season 4 and the final twist in episode 7 – The Massacre at Hawkins Lab.
6. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) by Journey - In episode 408, Papa
The epic soft rock track soundtracks the closing moments of episode 8 in Volume 2, when the Hawkins gang are heading into their dangerous battle with Vecna.
A perfect, stirring, fist-pumping, rawk song, the track was given a remix by Bryce Miller/Alloy Tracks for the Netflix series and Journey frontman Steve Perry was so flattered that he helped out on an extended version.
"Being a huge fan of the show, having my music on the soundtrack made me very happy," said Perry.
"I truly love both these remixed versions as much as I do the original recording from the Journey Frontiers record."
7. Master of Puppets by Metallica - In episode 408 The Piggyback
How could we not include it? Eddie Munson's last stand is soundtracked by the thrashing metal classic Master of Puppets by rock legends Metallica.
The title track of Metallica's breakthrough third album, the song is one of the best known metal songs of all time.
Talking about the scene, actor Joseph Quinn told the LA Times: "I remember Skyping with the [creators the Duffer] brothers before I signed on, and they weren't giving away very much. They sent me a couple emails asking if I played guitar and I said yes I did.
"Then they sent the script over and I kind of imploded and went to go buy a guitar as soon as I could and started practicing."
He added: "It just feels right. And more than anything, it just feels fun. It's that energy through that whole kind of ridiculous sequence that brings all of these storylines together. That crescendo was just so inventive and ultimately so entertaining."
