The Umbrella Academy season 3: Will there be a third series of Netflix’s comic book TV show?
With the first two seasons of the smash hit superhero series available to binge-watch on Netflix, what do we know about The Umbrella Academy series 3 so far?
Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy was one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2019, and we’d be surprised if season 2 didn’t follow the same path, given the huge hype around it.
Based on the comic book series created by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, the superhero series follows a family of seven adopted siblings who prepare to save the world - except, they often cause more problems than those they try and fix.
With all ten episodes of The Umbrella Season 2 available to binge-watch on Netflix, talk has of course turned to the next series.
But can fans expect more of The Umbrella Academy action on their screens? Here’s what we know about season 3 and beyond so far...
The Umbrella Academy season 3 release date and how to watch in the UK
Netflix has not officially announced that The Umbrella Academy has been commissioned for season 3, but a source revealed to whats-on-netflix.com that "the streaming service has already decided to renew the third season".
The source adds that Lauren Otero (Girl Meets World) and Elizabeth Padden (Future Man) have been attached to the writing team for The Umbrella Academy season 3, and that work has officially begun on the new season.
Due to COVID-19 disruption to TV and film productions, we wouldn't expect the series to start filming until much later in 2020 - and that means a third series wouldn't land on Netflix until 2021 at the earliest.
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2 have each consisted of ten episodes, so we'd expect season 3 to be the same.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 cast in a nutshell
If a third season of The Umbrella Academy is announced, we’d expect all the main characters to return as they all made it to the end of season 2 alive - that’s Luther / Number One (Tom Hopper), Diego / Number Two (David Castañeda), Allison / Number Three (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus / Number Four (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben / Number Six (Justin H. Min) and Vanya / Number Seven (Ellen Page).
Expect to see more of Lila (Ritu Arya) in series 3, after she escaped (it was revealed that she was also one of the babies who were born on the same day as The Umbrella Academy), along with The Handler (Kate Walsh), who always manages to cheat death. Will Lila join the family, or fight against them?
Speaking to BT.com and other journalists, Robert Sheehan and Tom Hopper confirmed they’d be up for returning to their characters in a third series,
Sheehan said in the interview: “I’d love to do one [another series]. I’m always hatching pipe dreams and sending emails to Steve [Blackman, The Umbrella Academy showrunner], and that’s the fun of it.”
Hopper added: “Yeah, we love hanging around in this world, it’s a lot of fun and we all love working together. It’s quite a gift to have the kind of show we have, we have a showrunner who’s very collaborative, it’s very freeing as an actor so yes, absolutely…I’d love to go back and do a bunch more of these.
“You’re always talking about future seasons, from season 1 you’re talking about where the show could go. There’s an element of assuming the story is going to continue until you’re told that it’s not going to continue.
“You’re always keeping it alive in your head as an actor, because you don’t kill off a character in your head until you’re told that it’s done. You’re always thinking about where it could go. You’re just trying to keep it alive until the plug is pulled.”
The Umbrella Academy season 3 plot: What will happen?
It's not known whether the script for season 3 has been written yet, but we can make some assumptions on what's in store based on the season 2 ending.
As Abby Robinson from Digital Spy reports, the end of the series saw Ben stop Vanya - who was moments away from blowing up the FBI building in Dallas and setting nuclear war in motion between the US and the Soviets - from causing World War III.
The family then returned to 2019 in one piece, except it’s not as they left it as The Umbrella Academy is now The Sparrow Academy. This ties in with the next chapter of the comic book series, titled 'Sparrow Academy' - so perhaps a plot point for season 3?
Speaking to Forbes, Gerard Way - who writes the comics that the show is based on - said that the the 'Sparrow Academy' volume of the comics would answer a major question fans have been asking since the very beginning...
“[It] deals with a very big reveal in the Umbrella Academy universe, something that had been secret for a long time, and our siblings learn a lot about what was happening behind the scenes, as well as discovering the true nature of some characters that have been with them since the beginning,” Way teased.
“The series finally starts to answer the question: ‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore.”
Is there a trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3?
There’s not currently a trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3 as it hasn’t been filmed.
Will there be more seasons of The Umbrella Academy?
At the moment, no more seasons of The Umbrella Academy have been announced. But, showrunner Steve Blackman recently signed an overall output deal with Netflix that means he’s going to be producing new TV shows for Netflix as well as continuing his work on The Umbrella Academy.
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix now.
