The best Halloween movies

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane

When teenage beauty Mandy accepts an invite to a boy's weekend getaway, everyone thinks they're in for a wild time. But as the party heats up, the body count starts to climb in increasingly gruesome ways. Starring Amber Heard and Anson Mount.

Cabin In The Woods

A group of college friends spend a weekend in an isolated cabin, only to be attacked by supernatural creatures while technicians in a control room manipulate every move they make. The film stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth and Anna Hutchinson and was created by Buffy the Vampire Slayer dream team Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.

Hostel

Written & directed by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever), Hostel is a dark, bloody exploration of torture and evil. The film centres on two young Americans backpacking through Europe who find themselves lured in as victims of a murder-for-profit business. Graphic and deeply disturbing, Hostel is one of the most brutal films ever made!

The Cornetto Trilogy: Hot Fuzz, Shaun Of The Dead & The World's End

The Cornetto Trilogy, created by British comedy trio Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost, are perfect movies for those of us who struggle with the scarier and gorier side of horror films.

Pegg, Wright and Frost are clearly diehard horror fanatics, but the nods and winks to the genre are done within the structures of a comedy that help make the zombies and violence a little less spooky.

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

Zombies and Jane Austen, together at last.

A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England.

Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr Darcy (Sam Riley) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield in order to defeat the undead once and for all.

The Purge

All four of the hugely successful dystopian horror movies in The Purge franchise are available on Amazon Prime Video.

The films present a seemingly normal, crime-free America in the near future. But the dark truth is that the country has an annual national holiday known as the Purge, a day in which all crime, including murder, becomes legal for a 12-hour period.

The franchise also launched a TV series and The Purge season 1 and 2 are also both on Prime Video.

Midsommar

Midsommar follows a couple who travel to Sweden to visit a rural hometown's fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

The Nun

The Nun follows a priest with a haunted past and a novice who are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Resident Evil

This Japanese horror media franchise follows former security specialist Alice (Milla Jovovich, The Rookies) and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. They fight an out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures.

Mara

Follow criminal psychologist Kate Fuller (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace) as she is assigned to the murder of a man who has seemingly been strangled in his sleep. As Kate investigates, she experiences the same petrifying symptoms and spirals through a chilling nightmare.

Brahms: The Boy 2

A young family move into a guest house on the estate where their young son soon makes an unsettling new friend, an eerily life-like doll he calls Brahms who has an evil history

Family-friendly Halloween movies for kids

Igor

Determined to prove he can create his own diabolical invention, a mad scientist's nice-guy assistant Igor creates a female Franken-monster. But his creation, Eva, is sweet and sings show tunes.

John Cusack, Molly Shannon and Myleene Klass are in the voice cast of this animated treat.

Ghostbuster II

Older kids and parents will enjoy a nostalgia return to this 80s classic with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver leading the cast.

The Ghostbusters team reunited for this biggest battle yet as an enormous underground river of slime threatens New York City.

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride

It’s classic Tim Burton with the voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Whitehouse, Joanna Lumley and Albert Finney among the impressive cast.

Both funny and full of creepy horror, this movie tells the chilling tale of Victor who accidentally marries a corpse bride instead of his fiancé, Victoria.

Liking the land of the dead, he begins to fall for his new bride, but Victoria's life is in danger. As time runs out for all, can they get what they deserve?

The Dog Who Saved Halloween

One for really young viewers, this is the latest tale in the ‘The Dog Who Saved...’ series.

Zeus & the Bannisters have moved into a new house just in time for Halloween. Everything seems to be going well until they notice strange lights and sounds coming from neighbour Eli's (Lance Henriksen) house.

Horror TV series to watch

Don’t forget there are loads of great horror TV series to enjoy on Amazon Prime Video as well, including Sarah Michelle Gellar’s 90s classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the all-new Walking Dead: World Beyond series and, from October 30, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s hilarious new ghost-hunting TV series Truth Seekers.
