While a film about a family searching for sanctuary in an end-of-the-world scenario might feel all too real for some viewers right now, Greenland isn’t an ordinary disaster movie.

Focusing on themes of family and humanity, Greenland is blockbuster escapism with a beautiful and emotional core.

What is Greenland about?

In the action-packed disaster-thriller, a family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races towards Earth. 

John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary.

Amid terrifying reports of cities around the world being levelled by the comet’s fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. 

As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

Butler’s CV includes everything from romantic comedies to comic book action, but Greenland finds the Scottish star playing to his strengths as the vulnerable action hero.

Explaining why he loves working with Butler, director Ric Roman Waugh told Den of Geek: “What I love about Gerry is he’s fearless. He’s not afraid to show his vulnerabilities, to play a flawed character, to be sensitive - things that I think are more masculine for a man than a lot of the action heroes or characters that I see in today’s movies that are impervious to pain.”

Most action movies these days go in all guns blazing and skip past emotion, brains and character and subjects to consider worrying about.

Greenland breaks from this tradition, choosing to centre this story on the Garrity family dynamic and the behaviour of the people they meet along the way in the crisis.

Morena Baccarin and Butler’s characters feel relatable and Greenland has an authenticity and rawness that raises the film above most action flicks.

Don’t believe us? The critics have been saluting Butler’s performance and director Waugh’s craft.

Mark Kermode has been shouting about the film and Gerard Butler's performance on Twitter, revealing that he's already watched it three times.

In his review for The Observer, he said:  "The result is a first-rate B-picture, and a timely reminder of the delights of well-crafted popcorn thrills."
